Are row cleaners required in front of the Dual Placement Brackets?

It all depends on how much trash is present. Also, the type of row cleaner is important as well. Ultimately, you need a clean strip 8–9″ wide to plant into.

Is much additional downforce required?

This will be determined by soil type, tillage practice, speed, etc. Notilling into clay will require more DP than planting into fluffy, worked, bean stubble.

Do these brackets work on 3 pt. planters?

We have many dual placement brackets out on 3 pt. planters and they work well. You must remember not to make any sharp turns with the planter in the ground. 3 pt. planters really “wag the tail,” and turns can put a lot of unnecessary side stress on the row unit. Following a creek or treeline is fine, as long as it is very gradual bend.

How deep in the soil do the nutrients get placed?

Every bracket is capable of placing the nutrients the same depth as the seed or just slightly deeper. For example, say you are set to plant 2″ deep. The bottom of the fertilizer opener can be adjusted down to the same depth as the seed opener. The openers are not spring loaded, so you can be sure the liquid is going where intended.

How far from the seed trench are the nutrients being placed?

The distance varies on the model of planter, but 2 7/8″–3 ¼″ is the Range.

Are these brackets good for starter placement ?

These bracket were originally designed to place large amounts of Nitrogen or Nitrogen plus starter. We would like to see starter placed in the seed trench below the seed. We like to see a minimum of 14 gals to the acre applied thru these brackets. You could apply less, but the distance from the seed would mean it would take a lot longer for the roots to gain much from it. I would say my average customer is in the 17–24 GPA range.

What is a good “recipe“ to put down?

I personally like to apply 14–15 GPA of 32%, 14–15 GPA of 10-34-0 (or 11-37-0) plus 2–3 gallons of thiosulfate. If your soil tests dictate it, now is a good time to add in some micro nutrients as well.

How much time is needed to install the brackets?

Installation time varies on which model planter you have. It could be as fast as 20 minutes per row to 75 minutes per row. This time does not include plumbing up the system. Figure on another 5–10 minutes per row of in-the-field adjusting time.
